Introduction:

Over the years, the efforts of Formentera’s society have been directed towards ensuring the survival of a model of island that is tranquil, welcoming, and environmentally conscious, while balancing conservation of the environment with tourist exploitation.

Development:

Implementation of the Sustainability law

The implementation of the Law for the Environmental and Economic Sustainability of the island of Formentera, approved on January 29, 2019, by the Parliament of the Balearic Islands with the support of all the parliamentary groups, will allow for the establishment of regulations regarding vehicle entry to the island. This is an important step to continue the island model that Formentera residents have chosen.

Fees and regulations

The application period for this year 2024 will be from June 1st to September 30th. Only vehicles (gasoline or diesel) belonging to visitors from outside the islands will be subject to the fee. They will be required to pay 6 euros per day in June and September for cars, with a minimum fee of 15 euros, and 3 euros per day for motorcycles, with a minimum fee of 7.50 euros, according to the Mobility Minister.

In July and August, the fee will be 9 euros per day for cars, with a minimum fee of 45 euros, and 4.50 euros per day for motorcycles, with a minimum fee of 22.50 euros.

Residents of the Balearic Islands, owners of second homes on the island, residents of Ibiza who work in Formentera, authorized rental vehicles, and historic vehicles belonging to classic car clubs will be exempt from the fee.

Authorization and Control Process

The processing channel will be a web platform that has been operational since April 2019, adapted for use on computers, tablets, and mobile phones. Visitors can use this platform to search for the days they want to travel to Formentera with their vehicle and check for availability. If available, they will need to pay the fee, and then they will receive authorization to travel from Ibiza to Formentera by ferry with their car. Residents of the islands will need to go through a similar process but without making a payment.

Visiting vehicles allowed to circulate on the island will be limited to a maximum of 2,280 cars and 230 motorcycles. The fee for quads, caravans, and campervans is 0. The allocation method will be based on a first-come, first-served basis until the quota is exhausted.

The quota for visiting vehicles owned by residents of Ibiza will be limited to 220 cars and 20 motorcycles. The fee for quads, caravans, and campervans is 0. The allocation method will be based on a first-come, first-served basis until the quota is exhausted.

How will vehicles be controlled?”

According to sources from the Formentera Council, control over vehicles circulating on the island will be carried out at three levels:

  • Through a camera located in La Savina that will read the license plates of all vehicles entering the island. (Link to the news published by IB3 TV)
  • Through the attendants of the blue zone.
